Public consultation phase on the national PID roadmap launched

The national PID roadmap for Germany is entering the public comment phase. Expert communities and stakeholders from the fields of science and culture are invited to share their recommendations, perspectives, and practical experiences.

How can the use and implementation of persistent identifiers (PIDs) be better coordinated and further developed within a decentralized research system? This question is at the heart of the PID Roadmap for Germany, which is now entering a public consultation phase.

The roadmap outlines a plan for strengthening a networked and sustainable PID landscape in Germany. The focus is on the strategic development of a collaborative information infrastructure that takes into account both institutional implementation approaches and systemic framework conditions for consistent PID use. Against the backdrop of the federal structure of the research system, a step-by-step, process-oriented approach is being pursued, aimed at developing a shared vision and coordinating goals, minimum standards, and responsibilities among key stakeholders.

The roadmap consolidates findings from the PID Network Germany project as well as from national and international initiatives and contains recommendations for various stakeholder groups in the fields of science and culture. It outlines PID development at the national level and addresses key needs and challenges.

The PID Roadmap is being made available as an editable online document for public comment. We particularly invite representatives from research and information infrastructure institutions, funding organizations, libraries, repository and publication services, IT managers, research data managers, as well as academic communities and initiatives in the research and cultural sectors.

Feedback is expressly welcome and is intended to help further refine the recommendations and improve them in a practical manner. Constructive suggestions are particularly helpful, as are optional brief details regarding the commenter’s professional background or institutional perspective. Anonymous comments are also possible.

Comments may be submitted in either German or English. The consultation period runs until June 10, 2026.

We would like to thank all participants in advance for your time, expertise, and support in further developing the PID Roadmap for Germany.
