The central reference point for the pilot project is the DataCite Metadata Generator (DMG). The DMG is an established, continuously developed tool at LMU and is used globally by other institutions far beyond LMU. It thus offers a particularly suitable basis for testing the practice-oriented guidelines under real conditions and reflecting on their compatibility with existing workflows. In addition, the DataCite Best Practice Guide, which was also created by LMU and has been maintained for years, will be adapted to the latest version of the DataCite metadata schema and the recommendations of the practice-oriented guidelines.
The pilot phase deliberately focuses not on individual technical solutions, but on fundamental questions of implementation: How can the guidelines be meaningfully integrated into existing tools and documentation? How can improvements in metadata quality be implemented as easily as possible and made feasible for other institutions?
The collaboration with LMU is designed as an iterative process and will be accompanied by regular coordination meetings. We are very pleased to have LMU Munich as a pilot institution whose tools and experience are highly relevant to many players in the PID ecosystem, and we look forward to the impetus that this collaboration will generate for the project and beyond.
